How RJ Underground Was Founded:

In 1996, armed with a single directional drilling machine, Richard and Jeanne Johnston founded RJ Underground, Inc. In just one year, by February of 1997, RJ Underground, Inc became incorporated and had quickly evolved into a four-man crew. Over the course of much success RJ Underground, Inc. has completed some of the trade’s toughest jobs. With the company’s consistent growth RJ Underground Inc. now operates 8 directional drills, hydro excavators, excavators, and numerous pieces of equipment to facilitate the installation of multiple types of utilities. Today, RJ Underground has grown to employ more than 30 people and is a full-scale utility underground contractor.

Principal Individuals

Richard Johnston – Richard Johnston is the President of RJ Underground, Inc. He has been involved in the drilling industry since 1995 and has been President of RJ Underground, Inc. since 1996. He currently has Local 139 Union Operators status.

Mark McCormick – Mark McCormick is the Senior Project Manager/Estimator for RJ Underground, Inc. He has been involved in the drilling industry and has been working for RJ Underground, Inc. since 2002.

Richie Johnston – Richie Johnston is a Project Manager/Estimator for RJ Underground, Inc. He has been involved in the drilling industry since 2011 and has been working for RJ Underground, Inc. since 2015.

Skilled Staff

RJ Underground, Inc. currently has 12 highly skilled Union Operators, 7 of the hardest working Union Laborers, and a full-time Expert Mechanic whose profiles are available upon request. 

RJ Underground, Inc is signatory to both Operator and Laborer Unions located in Illinois (Local 150, Local 02, Local 41, Local 32), Indiana (Local 81), and Wisconsin (Local 139, Local 113).
